The Second Candy Quest Demo Is Finally Here!

Candy Quest is a Halloween-themed platformer for the Gameboy Color. You can play it on this web page, on an emulator that supports Gameboy Color games, or even on real hardware with a flash cartridge.

This demo serves to polish and improve what was seen in Demo V1. While things are still subject to change since the game is still a work in progress, Demo V2 is a much better reflection of what the final game will look like.

Be sure to follow the creator (that's me, hello!) on Twitter(X), https://twitter.com/MaxBeforeTheOne, if you want to follow along with Candy Quest’s development progress. Feel free to message me with any questions/inquiries/whatever!

Demo V2 Overview

After being summoned by the Pumpking on Halloween night, the four Pumpkids set out on a quest to collect as much candy as possible and light the four Confectionery Candles in order to perform a mysterious potion brewing ritual for their highness…

In this demo you’ll take control of PPK, (the Purple Pumpkid), and play through the first of four worlds, the Fall Forest. There you can find four main levels full of candy to discover and collect, an optional bonus level with a unique challenge, and a big bad boss for you to scare to death!

This demo is roughly a 45-minute playthrough and comes with three different ending art screens for you to achieve based on how much candy you collect. Two of which should be obvious on how to get, but the third may be a bit more obscure… How much candy will you collect?

New Features:

  • New level layouts for the four main stages.
  • The title screen, file select screen, and other menus have been updated.
  • The introduction has been updated with a whole new story cutscene and tutorial section.
  • The way existing candy collectables work has been updated, and a new type of candy has been added for you to collect in each main level.
  • There are new ways to view the candy you’ve collected via a new location on the map and an in-level menu.
  • The moody green “Frightful Forest” has been updated visually to the autumnal orange “Fall Forest”.
  • Other general improvements and junk. You can check out the full list of new stuff here: https://maxbeforetheone.itch.io/candy-quest-demo-v2/devlog/589467/candy-quest-de...

Important Extra Info:

  • I couldn’t be bothered to update all the palettes for everything to be super readable on real hardware, YET. So, if you play on an actual Gameboy device, especially one that isn’t backlit, some visuals may look off or be hard to read. (But it shouldn’t be anything crazy bad that’ll ruin the game, I’m just nitpicky and think it could look better).
  • I’m currently using whatever free music I could find that fits, but in the future, I’ll be seeking out creators to have custom music made. The same goes for sounds. God, thinking about replacing all the sounds in GBS sounds terrible. I probably won’t replace everything, but I’ll likely need some custom sounds anyway.
  • I also might seek out artists for getting cover/key art made. I can work good with pixels, but not much else. This is less of a priority though.
  • I do plan on getting physical copies made when the game is complete. Not sure how/with who yet though, but I have had one publisher reach out to me already regarding getting physical copies made.
  • I do not know when the game will be complete.

Updates Since Release:

  • Added "Press Start to skip intro" scene.
  • Fixed music not playing when replaying Wicked Woods level.
  • Fixed miscolored tiles in Wicked Woods level.
  • Fixed miscolored tiles in Spooky Store level.
  • Fixed issue preventing the player from seeing the 100% ending. (Hopefully.)

Love this game! Been playing on a couple Miyoo Mini devices. Any updates on the finished version? I will happily pay for this game! It's beautiful, and actually love the jump/"boo"st jump aspect of the game. It gives it a very cool feel once you get the hang of it. Excellent work my friend!

Unfortunately there is currently no estimation for when the game will be complete other than sometime next year hopefully. Thank you for and the compliments, and for playing as well!

No worries, keep up the great work. I look forward to your release. Thank you for the response!

This is such a lovely game so far, it embodies the Halloween spirit in such a delightful way!! There's so much care put into the animations and cutscenes, and the game-feel is actually quite nice. It took me a bit to get used to, but now I just can't wait to check out more. Hoping someday to play it on some actual hardware too. I played a bit of it in a video I just made if you're at all curious:

This game already has so much style and charm! Fall Forest is a place I want to visit in real life, which is something I think all levels should aspire to do. My only suggestion is that the orange pumpkins are a little hard to see against the similarly colored leaves. But this is a small detail. I look forward to the full release!

I'm glad you're enjoying it! I'm also already planning on updating the color palettes for easier readability too.
