______________________________________________________________

Candy Quest is a Halloween-themed collectathon/platformer mashup Game Boy game.  This current demo features the main story introduction and tutorial, as well as the whole first world, the Frightful Forest. Candy Quest is still a WIP game, so expect to see more updates featuring new levels/worlds/other content in the future!

______________________________________________________________

Follow the four Pumpkids, PPK, GPK, YPK, and RPK, along their quest to collect as much candy as possible before Halloween night ends!

On Halloween night, the four Pumpkids find their plans to go trick-or-treating interrupted by a sudden summoning from the Pumpking. He's made a breakthrough in his research of the Potion of Sugarious, a magical potion is said to bestow great powers to whoever drinks it.

The four Pumpkids are tasked with setting up a ritual to allow the Pumpking to brew the potion. They must light the four Candles of Sucrosia that are scattered across the land, and gather as much special candy as they can in order to make the potion as powerful as possible. However, they only have until the end of Halloween night before their chance to create the Potion of Sugarious slips away.

Will the Pumpkids be able to light the candles in time? Will they collect enough candy to brew the strongest potion of all? Put your platforming skills to the test and find out in Candy Quest!

Any chance of seeing a final release soon? Loving this game and would willingly pay for a few extra boards!

Hey, I'm glad you like the game! I'm still actively working on Candy Quest, but I can't say for certain when the game will be complete. I did just release a new demo version though incase you missed it: https://maxbeforetheone.itch.io/candy-quest-demo-v3

This is some high-quality stuff. Keep up the good work!

Oh, and Happy Halloween!

Thank you, and Happy Halloween to you as well! Don't forget there's a second demo available for Candy Quest if you haven't seen it, this first version is a bit rough around the edges haha.

Wait... what? Yay! So I'll try that one as well, then!

Hi! I think that this is such a wonderful project. I really enjoy the graphics and cute dialogue. Not to mention the gameplay too. I haven't finished it, but what I did play, I like so far - I look forward to more worlds to explore. I also do agree that the tutorial is a little long in the tooth.

I'm learning GB studio right now and playing around with the controls for a platformer game, this is very inspiring.

Thanks for checking out this demo, I'm glad you've enjoyed it! Good luck with your GBS projects!

This is awesome. I've been waiting to play this for a long time and I'm glad I finally found that it's out

The graphics are *amazing*. The characters are funny and charming

If I have any critiques it's that I think the tutorial is too long and involved. I think it's more fun when tutorials are invisible, or at least as much of it is invisible as possible. Also, I prefer a jump that you can control by letting go of the jump button

Other than those things, I'm loving this and really excited to see it progress

I agree with the tutorial stuff, a new simpler tutorial is literally the second thing on my to-do list. As for the controllable jump, I think I tried messing around with it a long time ago and it ended up interfering with other mechanics, but I'll definitely take another look at it. Thanks for checking it out!

Cool! I'm really excited to play more. I finished the whole demo and only have one lollypop left to find. This is one of the highest quality games made in GBStudio and every single thing you're doing shines.

I can't wait to see the other worlds since this forest one already looks so good. I'm taking notes at every screen to improve my own graphics. And I love the characters and personality that shines through

Some other critiques after finishing the demo:

  • The boss music doesn't feel very dramatic
  • I think charging the boo jump could stand to be faster
  • I got confused where I could walk on the map after level 3
  • If possible, indicating that the player collected everything in each level (or not) on the map would be great. Like maybe a check mark sprite or something
  • It starts off very challenging. That's a choice but I wanted to let you know in case you want to start it off easier
(+1)
  • While I'm a fan of the music used for it, it'll likely get replaced with a new track in the future, along with most of the other songs since I'm just using free stuff at the moment.
  • This is to prevent the player from flying over everything, although you can still do it in some of the slower-running areas which I can't really work around but I'm fine with.
  • Updating the map visuals is on my to do list already, I will take note of this when I get to it.
  • That's a great idea, the next build will also have an area to view all of your collected candy in the world in a menu.
  • The next build will have new more polished level layouts, (I've already made them) that are more forgiving, but I'm still aiming for a bit more of a challenge than most games.

Thank you for the feedback, I'm glad you've enjoyed the demo! I can't wait to get the next one out because it'll be such a step up from this. (I find it to be pretty rough in comparison to the new current build lol.)

Awesome! I can't wait to play the next demo

Dang this game is really a treat to play! Is there an estimated full release?

(1 edit)

If you're asking will the game be completed, I hope it will be in the future. I'm still making progress on it and have no plans on stopping. If you're asking if there's an estimated release date for the final game, I have no idea. Glad you enjoyed this first demo though, a second one is on it's way!

Ok cool

I loved the demo is more than amazing the work you did, the characters, scenarios are magnificent 10 out of 10 this demo I hope soon you can release a new demo I encourage the project (the only lollipop I could not get was the weabing webs I do not know if for lack of control or a small error because I could not get to it, but from there on out the rest is excellent).

Congrats! this looks awesome. Do you have twitter account?

I do now https://twitter.com/MaxBeforeTheOne

This is incredibly good. The art and color just blow my mind. I found a silly typo at the end of the tutorial where it says ineed instead of indeed.

What a great demo! the game looks beautiful. Chaining jumps and charged attacks is satisfying. The inclusion of a tutorial is great and the fact it is skippable is greatly appreciated. I did get a bug on level 3 (the webs one) where after exiting the lollipop room and doing charge attack I lost the ability to move left and right. Otherwise its a really charming and polished experience! Looking forward to full release.

Thank you! Someone else had encountered the same issue, but I've updated the game and rom file to fix it.

That was a really fun experience from start to finish with a satisfying challenge in the platforming and tight controls! Haven't put my skills to the test with an all-lollipops run (yet), but thank you for including my music as part of the experience!

Wow! That looks just awesome! Keep up the excellent work!

A really lovely game, with very appealing graphics and a good sence of humor, i see a lot of potential in this, keep up the good work!

As a favor, could you upload the demo's rom, please? Im having trouble playing the web version, since it doesnt have good controls.
